  This is easily one of my favourite spots in town, especially in colder months. Actually, also in summer, because of the rooftop cafè :)

  If you don't have a lot of money and you still want to be able to read, this is the place for you. It's true, you need to pay 23€ a year (if you're not a student), but then the choice you have is enormous, in German, as well as in English, Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Serbian-Croatian, Arabic, Swedish and a few more languages. You will find a ton of fiction, but also non-fiction, about all sorts of topics (not only in German.)

  It is also a good place to work, if you manage to find a spot at the very end of the building, away from the hustle and bustle of the information counters. If you have a card, you get free wireless.

  There are also lots of couches and armchairs to read books there, if you don't have or don't want a card. I did that many times when I had no card and librarians will leave you alone. Lots of periodicals on all sorts of topics are also on offer, in several languages.

  Also, keep in mind that the library system here is a network, so you can order anything to/from the central library and just pick it up there (or at your library.)

  The library organises several readings and talks about many topics, such as the regular monthly Zara talk about racism-related issues, as well as free monthly meetings with a teacher for those who are learning German.

  Main Library of the City of Vienna. Spectacular urban architecture. Books, dvds, cd-roms, internet-pcs - information, newspapers....

  international flair, meeting point, pretty view from the staircase and the roof terrace.

  One of the hot spots in town.

  not really a bookstore, but there isn't any category that fits better. the library is a really nice place to be. you can read there, borrow books and dvds for almost nothing and also have a drink in the cafe on the top. the view from the "roof" is extraordinary. in the summer it is one of the "places to be" in vienna. i remember so much great evenenings with bottles of beer on the stairs.
